Exbouncer is fairly correct. You are safe just about anywhere on the north coast, from port antonio to negril. The culture is generaly so tourist oriented that most local people just don't want to disrespect you as an obvious visitor to the island.

i dont like his terminology 'natives' though. Its slightly offensive. Would you call a white person from NY or Montreal or even London a 'native'? You kinda sound like Christopher Colombus 'discovering' the new world and describing the 'natives' that he found here as dark skinned beings of another kind.

Negril is definitely the safest for tourist. The problem is that you get a very watered down version of Jamaica. I don't know what you are looking for but the natives are so afraid of offending a tourist that the will not do anything that I consider fun. The last time I went i stayed in Montego Bay. My wife and two children were with me. We met a very nice guy that took us off of the resort (I do not suggest you do this) and we went shopping where the natives shopped. We ate native food (Very Hot and Spicy) with native people and was even able to go back to the resort, leave our children and attend native parties. Aside from the constant marriage proposals and sexual invitations, it still stands as the best vacation my family had and we've been all over the Caribbean and on Disney Cruises.

Actually the SAFEST places are off the beaten path. What's called the "bush". These small town's rarely see tourists and aren't expecting you when you show up, so they are both curious & very nice...of course their accent is alot thicker so understanding may be a problem, but "country people " are warm and friendly and you'll never have the begging that happens in the tourist areas like Ochi, Mobay, Negril. Though driving the interior of the island has it's risks, mainly no road signs an only an occasional direction sign, but being lost is part of the fun & safe, as asking someone the way home works well.

As mentioned, Port Antonio is nice, as is Black River, Mandeville, Savlamar, Falmouth and a few other town's that attract tourists, but they are increasing their tourist traffic which increases the bad elements too. Understand that the money attracts outsiders so Negril, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios has people not from there that come in trying to make a dollar and bring in their own form of "crime" which could be as simple as stealing your stuff while you're at the beach & not paying attention.

As to Sting's comment about "natives", that's ridiculous...people call themselves natives all over the world... " I'm a native Californian " or if someone moves from New York to Florida " I live in Florida, but I'm a native New Yorker " is said all the time. A native only designates where you're from...period.

i'm from Jamaica but was raised in Canada, and i have been back a few times, Negril is a great spot. Just stay away from places in Jamaica like Kingston and Spanish town and you will be fine. Jamaica is a beautiful place

I like the EAST COAST around Port Antonio.. it's far enough away from all the drugs and crime on the rest of the island that it's relatively safe.
