It's a public holiday and the government announced the national project for the day this year it's Water Square in Falmoth, Trelawny.

Projects are however carried out by various community organisations. Churches, schools and community centers are ususally the focus of the day. Projects usually run along the lines of beautification, refurbishing and even actually constructing new buildings.

Individual homeowners also conduct massive cleanings and so on in their own homes(trucks carry large appliances for disposal and operate for free on this day, in community spirit).

Jamaica of course is the home of the most fabulous beaches and reggae music. The beaches will not be empty and there will be stage shows and parties held in the diiferent communities after all the work is done.

Labour day here in Jamaica is different from that in the States. The main objective of the day here is to have fellow jamaicans labour in an attempt to uplift their country. Projects are identified in communities and parishes and people work on them in an attempt to build their environs.

A national project is identified each year and major work is done on this project as it must be one that will improve the lives of the average Jamaica in that area.

Nights are usually used for parties but that is just by people who might want to lay down the stress of the day.

No we don't celebrates it with parties like the American Labour Day nor is it laid back either- (traditionally) we actually get to work cleaning our houses our communities painting buildings planting flowers etc However some neighborhood put on parties in the evenings to celebrate a hard days work.

It can be laid back though if you want it to be.

Its a day to clean and throw away all your unwanted stuff. Most businesses organize projects like painting and cleaning schools, churches going homes to help out. As for party you might fine one or two on that day but that's not the focus.
